The JMST has been published as a bimonthly journal since 1985. The bimonthly Journal will publish original papers (including letters and research notes) and occasionally critical reviews covering a broad spectrum of materials science and technology, encompassing: metallic materials, inorganic nonmetallic materials, and composite materials etc.
Emphasis will be put on the frontiers of advanced materials in terms of properties, constituents, preparation and characterization of materials.

The JMST, the sole international journal in the field of materials science published in English in China, reports principally the achievements of materials science in China, and publishes some foreign contributions with a proper space, putting the stress on the original papers with novelty. The journal has been awarded the excellent periodical in China. The journal has been famed for a window for watching the trend of materials research in China.
